How much of a sliding window opens?

On a typical two-panel slider, one panel moves past the other to open roughly half the width. Other configurations depend on the product series.

Does it need space outside?

The sash moves within the frame, so it does not swing into a walkway or patio. Screens and cleaning access still need consideration.
